New mobiles have gadgets for the elderly

As the mobile world booms with complex technological smartphones and tablets, two rival firms are carving up a growing but largely ignored market for the elderly.

Their priority is not so much to zip their users from the Internet to Facebook or from MP3 songs to photos and videos.

Instead, the gadgets they pack into their phones include a night torch that also flashes when the phone rings, or a pull-out pad for writing down notes with an actual, real pen.

"In Spain, France, Britain or Italy, there are 10 to 15 million people aged 60 or more," said Christophe Yerolymos, head of Austrian group Emporia's French subsidiary.

"Of these 15 million, about half don't use mobile phones," he added.

Even among the half that do, nearly two-thirds had devices that were not appropriate for their needs, he said at his stand in the mobile industry's annual congress in Barcelona.

Emporia, celebrating its 20th anniversary, and the Swedish group Doro, which launched mobiles for seniors in 2007, share a market which is otherwise mostly ignored.

Their phones have the same size and styling of other mobiles but with more readable screens, larger buttons and compatibility with Vodafone made an attempt with mixed success in the mid-2000s with its Vodafone Simply.

Emporia's customers are dynamic people who surf the Internet but mostly from home, Yerolymos said.

The Austrian business, which offers mobiles for 50 to 100 euros ($70-140), expects to move one million devices between 2010 and 2011, and twice that in the following year.

Doro boasts of 1.2 million sales since 2007.

Focussed more on health, Doro offers two models -- the Easy, which is a lot like the simple-to-use Emporia phones; and the Plus, which has four buttons, A, B, C, and D with memorized numbers along with an SOS button.

Ryan Trendell, head of Doro's British business said the Plus was "very specialised, very, very easy to use. Maybe for someone who is 80, 90, maybe someone suffering with dementia or loss of memory."

Prolimatech Intros Black Series Genesis CPU Heatsink

Wacky, high-end heatsink designer Prolimatech announced a new black variant of its Genesis CPU heatsink, famed for its asymmetric design. The new Black Series Genesis has been launched exclusively through a certain European retailer, and will be generally available soon.

The new Black Series Genesis, apart from its matte-black anodised aluminum fins, is identical to the original, launched back in February, 2011. It is a large category CPU heatsink, which uses a dual aluminum fin tower design, except that while one of its fin towers is arranged perpendicular to the plane of the motherboard (like most tower-type heatsinks), the other one is arranged parallel to that plane (like most top-flow heatsinks).

At its base, six nickel-plated copper heat pipes make indirect contact with the CPU. The six then convey heat to each of the two aluminum fin towers, where under the air-flow of 120 mm or 140 mm fans, heat is dissipated. The perpendicular tower focuses on cooling the CPU, with most of its exhaust making its way out of the case, while the parallel tower could end up cooling other components on the motherboard such as memory and VRM, under its air-flow.

The Black Series Genesis supports a full range of CPU socket types, including LGA2011, LGA1155/LGA1156, LGA1366, LGA775; AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2, FM2/FM1; although you should ensure your case and motherboard have just enough room for it. Apart from the heatsink itself, major parts of the mounting kit are black.

As mentioned earlier, the Black Series Genesis from Prolimatech, is launched exclusively by a European retailer, Overclockers UK. It is priced at£59.90 (US $93, SG $119). It will be generally available a little later.

Microsoft pulls security update for Windows 2000 from servers

Microsoft is pulling a certain security update for the aging Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system from its servers after receiving claims and feedback from the public that the update had failed to fix the very issue it was designed to patch.

In a blog posting made on the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), Group Manager Jerry Bryant said that the problematic patch (MS10-025)only affected “Windows 2000 Servers in an non-default configuration”, explaining that only machines that had Windows Media Services would be offered the security update; other servers running on Windows 2000 without Windows Media Services were not affected.

No definite date was given for the re-release of the update, but Jerry said that once the team has agreed on it, the information will be announed Microsoft's own MSRC twitter account (@MSFTSecResponse).

Still, given Windows 2000's age, it is rather unlikely that the botched security update will have little (if any) adverse impact on most servers, as most Windows-based servers should have already migrated to Windows Server 2003 or newer.

Kingmax Mars DDR2-1066 Memories

Known for their overclocking performance, Kingmax memory products havequietly transitioned into the DDR2 era. Since the days of PC-100/133, Kingmaxwas the world’s first to launch proprietary TinyBGA-packaged PC-150 memorymodules and the only brand to offer lifetime warranty for its products, quicklymaking it one of the top three memory brands in Taiwan. Today, as DDR2 is nowthe reigning standard, all memory products are completely BGA packaged – atechnology Kingmax has been building up for the past eight years. Kingmax hasalso invested US$ 10 million to purchase the T5593 testing system, once againunderscoring Kingmax’s DDR2 strengths. Without any entry barriers, Kingmax hassuccessfully and smoothly launched three JEDEC memory modules, i.e. DDR2-533,-667 and -800. All three memory modules have been introduced in quick successiondue to tight scheduling for new products using DDR2 modules. Expecting aless-than-massive demand – compared to the DDR era – in the overclocking market,we have adopted a steadfast business approach, supplying consumers with memoryproducts of the best quality. 100% compatibility and performance make them thebest choice for your personal and notebook computer.

A brief glance at trends in product development shows that Northbridge chipsets, including Intel 945/955 and 965/975 and NVIDIA nForce 680i/650i, can alldirectly support 1066MHz; and Intel has also launched a stream of CPUs,including dual-core X6800, E6700 and E6600 and quad-core QX6700 and QX6600,enabling 1066MHz FSB support. In fact, the latest CPUs, codenamed E6850, E6750and E6650, already have FSB supporting 1333MHz. In the foreseeable future, DDR2memory modules will be starting off at the frequency of 1066MHz. Foroverclockers pursuing extreme performance, this is undoubtedly an exciting pieceof news.

Microsoft Fixes Windows XP SP2 Laptop Battery Drain Problem

The Core Duo battery drain saga that was originally reported by Tom's Hardware has resurfaced. Anand Shimpi later correctly proved that the battery drain bug had absolutely nothing to do with Core Duo, but was actually a problem with Windows XP SP2. Just yesterday, Microsoft got around to publishing a fix for the problem.

The problem apparently plagues Windows XP notebooks that cannot correctly enter into processor idle sleep states, or C-states. When the processor cannot enter these states, the processor idles, but at a higher state. The result is wasted battery life and a slightly warmer CPU.

There are many reasons why Windows XP SP2 does not let the CPU enter into the correct state, but the one reason seemed to revolve around notebooks that have USB controllers that do not turn off. The original ASUS Core Duo notebook, for example, had an integrated web camera that would leave a USB controller enabled at all times. Microsoft stresses that the patch does not fix notebooks with that particular problem -- it only repairs the ACPI driver that governs which C-state the processor should reside.

The patch only exists for x86 versions of Windows XP, Service Pack 2.

Fujitsu Introduces World's First 300 GB 2.5 quot; SATA Hard Disk Drive

Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of the world's first 2.5" hard disk drive that offers storage capacity of 300 gigabytes (GB) with a Serial ATA interface. The new hard disk drive "MHX2300BT" will be available in late February 2007. Featuring the highest storage capacity in the 2.5" class, it will be available on a global basis for use primarily in multifunctional mobile PCs and digital TVs.

Fujitsu began selling hard disk drives with perpendicular magnetic recording in October of this year. It has been an industrial leader in introducing high-capacity 2.5" hard disk drives, launching products with 160 GB in September 2005 and 200 GB in May 2006 that garnered high praise from many customers.

MHX2300BT marks the commercial introduction of second generation of perpendicular magnetic recording technology. The new hard disk drive will be offered in 300 GB, the highest storage capacity available in 2.5" hard disk drives, and 250 GB versions, offering the capacity needed to store terrestrial broadcasting digital TV videos. This level of capacity makes these hard disk drives suitable alternatives to the 3.5"drives typically found in desktop PCs, and their small size makes them especially well-suited to flat-panel TVs with built-in recorders.

The new hard disk drives are the RoHS compliant and have read/write power consumption requirements of just 1.6 W, among the lowest in the world, making them environmentally-friendly products. They are also exceptionally quiet, emitting just 2.1 bels of noise at idle.

Microsoft releases Kinect for Windows with version 1.0 SDK

As promised at CES early last month, Microsoft has just launched Kinect for Windows in the form of the version 1.0 Software Development Kit and a new version of the Kinect hardware thats been tweaked to better suit close range operation at the desk.

At $249 for the bundled Kinect for Windows kit it does seem pretty steep when considering the fact that its possible to just head out, buy Kinect for Xbox 360 for $99, plug that into your PC and download the SDK freely off the internet. The issue is, you wont end up with the same result due to the device being modified to suit much closer distances, right up to just 40cm away while maintaining optimal accuracy and precision.

You may not want to bite just yet given the hefty $249.99 MSRP as seen listed over at Amazon, and the other factor being that were still waiting on developers to create some apps and games thatll hopefully wow many of us into wanting one of these things. Well have to see how that all pans out in the coming months.

Micron to introduce 415MB s Crucial RealSSD C400 at CES

Slightly over a year ago, Micron showcased the world's first native S-ATA 6Gbps Solid-State Drive (SSD). That was none other than the Crucial RealSSD C300.

It offered read speeds of 355MB/s andwrite speeds of 215MB/s.

This year, the successor to the C300 will be born.

The RealSSD C400 will be showcased at CES 2011. Developed on Micron's groundbreaking 25nm NAND flash technology, the C400 will enjoy a boost in overall speeds.

Read speeds have been bumped to 415MB/s, while write speeds will be at a reported 260MB/s.

The RealSSD C400 will be available in both 1.8" and 2.5" sizes, and will range in capacity from 64GB, to a generous 512GB.

As companies race to further innovate, and improve NAND flash technology, it is no wonder that the performance of the C400 significantly outweighs its predecessor.

Dean Klein, Vice President of Memory Systems Development at Micron, has this to say.

"SSDs are bringing excitement back into personal computing. Micron is accelerating this enthusiasm with the RealSSD portfolio, bringing even greater speeds and larger capacities than our previous-generation SSDs."

With this, it is no surprise that a user making the change from an early SSD, to one like the Crucial RealSSD C400 shall experience the same speed boost and wonderment alike to experiencing the sheer performance of an SSD for the first time coming from a mechanical Hard Disk Drive (HDD).

Linus Torvalds lashes out against NVIDIA

XDA’s developers may be the saviors of many halfhearted stock Android OS out of the box, and NVIDIA and Qualcomm are not making it any easier on advocates of open source.

In a recent YouTube video, Linus Torvalds was asked about NVIDIA’s lack of support for Linux, and Torvalds essentially said NVIDIA doesn’t give a “f*ck” about the open source community and that all NVIDIA cares about is selling chips.

“It’s sad, because NVIDIA tries to sell chips, a lot of chips into the Android market, and NVIDIA has been the single worst company we’ve ever had to deal with. So NVIDIA, f*ck* you,” Torvalds exclaimed.

Hardware manufacturers that sell their product through an open source platform like Android will get a lot of heat from developers if they don’t provide support for the hardware they make. XDA-developers’ ADAMOUTLER sums the problem with NVIDIA’s and Qualcomm’s, often, closed hardware rather nicely:

“Closed hardware makes it difficult for developers to isolate and troubleshoot problems. You can take a look into the past, almost one year ago, when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was released. The first fully supported processor was the Samsung Exynos, followed up quickly by the Texas Instruments OMAP, and shortly thereafter, the Samsung Hummingbird. It was quite literally months of development work, which involved getting data through official and not-so-official channels to get ICS on these closed-hardware NVIDIA and Qualcomm processors.”

“There is quite simply no reason whatsoever for an Open Platform like Android to be reduced to running on Closed Hardware like Tegra or Snapdragon,” he added.

Update 1

NVIDIA issued a statement to Phoronix:

Supporting Linux is important to NVIDIA, and we understand that there are people who are as passionate about Linux as an open source platform as we are passionate about delivering an awesome GPU experience.Recently, there have been some questions raised about our lack of support for our Optimus notebook technology. When we launched our Optimus notebook technology, it was with support for Windows 7 only. The open source community rallied to work around this with support from the Bumblebee Open Source Project http://bumblebee-project.org/. And as a result, weve recently made Installer and readme changes in our R295 drivers that were designed to make interaction with Bumblebee easier. While we understand that some people would prefer us to provide detailed documentation on all of our GPU internals, or be more active in Linux kernel community development discussions, we have made a decision to support Linux on our GPUs by leveraging NVIDIA common code, rather than the Linux common infrastructure. While this may not please everyone, it does allow us to provide the most consistent GPU experience to our customers, regardless of platform or operating system. As a result:1) Linux end users benefit from same-day support for new GPUs , OpenGL version and extension parity between NVIDIA Windows and NVIDIA Linux support, and OpenGL performance parity between NVIDIA Windows and NVIDIA Linux.2) We support a wide variety of GPUs on Linux, including our latest GeForce, Quadro, and Tesla-class GPUs, for both desktop and notebook platforms. Our drivers for these platforms are updated regularly, with seven updates released so far this year for Linux alone. The latest Linux drivers can be downloaded from www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html.3) We are a very active participant in the ARM Linux kernel. For the latest 3.4 ARM kernel – the next-gen kernel to be used on future Linux, Android, and Chrome distributions – NVIDIA ranks second in terms of total lines changed and fourth in terms of number of changesets for all employers or organizations. At the end of the day, providing a consistent GPU experience across multiple platforms for all of our customers continues to be one of our key goals.
